Dynamic duo— lower costs, higher cruising range

TRACTION SYSTEM

The heart of the MEET vehicle is the MAHLE 40 kW IPM (Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor) traction drive. This systems output is specifically designed for urban use, but also allows for longer journeys at higher speeds of up to 100 km/h.

The driving dynamics benefit from the wide speed range and torque vectoring, which distributes the torque between the driven wheels depending on the driving situation. As a heavy manual transmission is not required, switching losses are eliminated, leading to a further increase in systems efficiency.

The traction system consists of two 48-volt drive motors, each with 20 kW of maximum power output in a highly efficient and compact unit, which integrates a synchronous motor with a permanent magnet, the transmission, and the 48-volt power electronics that we have developed.

The potential applications extend far beyond the MEET concept and can be applied flexibly to various vehicle concepts. Thanks to advances in the hybridization of the combustion engine, the electrical output requirement in these vehicles is increasing. The replacement of the 12-volt electrical system by a 48-volt system is already underway. This change will then allow low-cost identical components to be used, taking advantage of economies of scale from large-scale production. It will thus be possible to use 48-volt drives in high-performance or heavy vehicles—for example, as a P4 hybrid—in the future.

The main advantage: the power output range of 48 volts remains substantially below the threshold of 60 volts. The cost factors for an electric powertrain, comparing a 48-volt with a high-voltage solution, are the safety features, the battery management system, and the electronics. Using a 48-volt powertrain allows us to reduce the costs for the motor and power electronics by 25 percent.
